A visually stunning journey showcasing the native plants of the northeastern United States in their natural habitats.

In a culmination of a decade’s worth of trekking across the northeastern region of the United States, this incredible photographic guidebook is the educated wanderer’s ultimate quick-reference. With a meticulous eye and experienced naturalist’s instincts, Mike Adamovic has diligently documented the native flora that naturally occurs within the New England states, in addition to New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey—what is generally regarded as the “Northeast.” Including common species to those of the greatest rarity, in environments ranging from alpine summits to coastal saltmarshes, Through the Seasons is a visual journey no book has provided before.

Organized by the most noteworthy habitats found throughout the region, as well as by season, and inclusive of photographic date stamps, Adamovic’s guide provides a phenological touchstone, as well as an encyclopedia of species and visual record of the beauty of Northeastern native plants in their natural environments. In this way it stands apart from many native plant books, most of which focus heavily or entirely on landscaping. That said, much of the material is of considerable benefit to landscape planning, as the images and commentary may provide ideas to help improve the conditions for certain species on a property. By seeing these plants in their natural environments one can better gauge what they truly require—and if they are even capable of being reared successfully in cultivation. Some species available for sale require special microhabitats, fungal symbionts, or very specific conditions, which are difficult, if not wholly impossible, to replicate outside of nursery settings. By bringing awareness to these issues, Through the Seasons can help fine-tune landscaping efforts and avoid expensive and time-consuming mishaps.

Finally, Adamovic emphasizes the importance of the preservation of native plant species for the elegantly simple reason that they support native insects and other wildlife that keep ecosystems in balance. Most native insects cannot be reared on non-native plants because they did not evolve in conjunction with them. An appreciation for and recognition of native species and the role they play through the seasons promises a healthier future for our natural world.

By Michael Adamovic

Michael Adamovic has always drawn strong inspiration from the transcendentalists Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson—their writings taught him to better appreciate the wonders of the natural world and contributed to him venturing into related professions. He holds a degree in environmental studies from Manhattanville College in Purchase, New York. Over the years, Adamovic has been employed by the New York State Parks Department where he worked as an invasive species researcher using biocontrol agents to help mitigate the noxious mile-a-minute vine. He also spent time at the Department of Environmental Conservation as part of the “Trees for Tribs” program, which helps landowners reforest tributaries along the Hudson River. More recently, Adamovic has worked as a landscape designer and horticulturist at One Nature, LLC. He currently works at Catskill Native Nursery as a propagation manager, collecting and germinating the seeds of local ecotypes. Adamovic enjoys growing rare and unusual species not commonly offered in the horticultural trade. In addition to his day job, he operates a photography business, Adamovic Nature Photography. His favorite subject matter to photograph is the region’s many orchids. He is also the creator of the Facebook group, Native Plants of the Northeast—the largest native plant group on the social media platform. He is the author of three other books, Hudson Valley Reflections: Illustrated Travel & Field Guide, Hudson Valley History & Mystery, and Hudson History & Mystery, Volume 2. He lives in Highland, New York with his wife and two children (adamovicnaturephotography.zenfolio.com).
